1966 Gibson Johnny Smith
Played by a Johnny Smith Student in CO - Sunburst
RARE (Gibson only made 20-100 of these per year), and probably my most "serious" jazz guitar. A players guitar, it PLAYS LIKE A DREAM. VG condition & mostly original; introduced in 1961, top of line Artist model at the time; 17’ wide, but thinner 3 inch depth; 1 3/4 inch wide neck at nut; 25 inch scale; Venetian cut-away; has very EX+ clean OHSC (Lifton) and a zippered case cover (Artistic Products), plus original F-hole plugs, PU cable and original Johnny Smith stamped Gibson hang tag; bought from a player in Colorado Springs who says he bought from Johnny Smith’s store there, took lessons from him and that it was a ’66; guitar has been played alot. Condition is about a ’7’, it has considerable heavy finish checking, numerous dings, and wear on back of neck (3-piece maple w/ mahogany strips), BUT NO REPAIRS OR CRACKS ANYWHERE; floating mini-humbucker PU has only one pole screw (a Johnny Smith trademark, PU works fine without them); cannot date guitar more accurately, but the large pebble tolex case would be older; Original Parts: TR cover, nut, gold L-5/deco type tailpiece with ’Johnny Smith’ insert, adj. ebony bridge w/ inlaid ’birds’, metal-capped gold knob, gold Kluson Sealfast tuners; Tort pickguard is correct, including binding (quite white, but others I see look this way, since there is no finish to yellow); neck has been pro-refretted, neck binding is quite white, probably replaced during refret; (lots of binding on this guitar, incl 7-ply on top!); solid maple back/sides have decent flame; carved spruce top with 2 X-braces has no repairs or cracks; multi-bound ebony fingerboard is EX; has heavy flats on it; split marker inlays are the ’real deal’ MOP; multi-bound peghead, pearl logo and diamond motif; This model is now the LeGrande and sells for $10K "
